Should New Orleans Residents Steer Clear of Ameriplan?

Savvy Insurance

Have you seen the work from home ads? If you have, and you responded to just one, then you probably got bombarded from then on out by an Ameriplan representative. Their approach is to change the lives of others by offering medical, dental and vision plans to them, something they need and want at an affordable rate that no one else can offer. But, the real question is how the individual representatives can make six digit incomes simply by selling lost cost insurance.

Here’s the real deal. You are paying $40 to $60 a month for a discount. You are still paying for the entire medical bill. Ameriplan does not reimburse you for any out of pocket expenses. They have set up contractual agreements with particular providers to offer their patients discounts for being members of Ameriplan. In return for your monthly payment, they promise 10 to 50 percent discount on exams, frames and lenses. So, if you purchase one pair of glasses and one pair of contact lenses each year, how much have you really saved? Also, you must pay for all of the services up front in order to receive your discount.

Consider the advantages for the doctors and providers. They don’t have hassle of dealing with an insurance company - which most often tell the doctor what their limits of care are and how much they can charge. Many doctors are forced sacrifice their ethics by making hard business decisions based on the lack of coverage by insurance plans.

New Orleans residents are among the many dealing with lack of medical, dental and vision plans, and rising insurance costs. Many of them are still spending massive amounts of money trying to rebuild their lives to pre-Katrina days. With lessoptions to choose from, what do they do? The best route may be to consider a monthly medical savings plan.
