Music in a Flamenco Festival

Entertainment Resources

Our contemporary Flamenco music is supported by it’s musical ancestor/innovators. The three most main to merit this divergence are Ramon Montoya, Sabicas, and Nino Ricardo. Born in a family of gypsy cattle ranchers in 1880, Ramon Montoya is accredited with advancing the Flamenco Guitar to prominent status. Although like many guitarists after him Montoya began his career accompanying singers and dancers, he ultimately began performing solo. As a result ending the guitar’s purely accompanying role. Ironically, it was Montoya’s nephew - Carlos Montoya - who was mainly accountable for focusing International attention on the solo Flamenco Guitar. From the 20’s through the 50’s he composed and performed in nearly every country. Even filling the Houston Astrodome! And locating himself in New York. Today it’s Carlos - not Ramon - who is the most famous Montoya. Curiously, Ramon didn’t agree with his nephews style, and gave him no support. Thus Carlos Montoya’s first guitar instructor was the local barber. But Ramon Montoya retains the distinction of being Flamenco Guitar’s first solo performer.

Influenced by Ramon Montoya, but an amazing leader in his own right - Sabicas - noted particularly for his accurate rhythm, mixed extensively with Male singers.(Cantaores) Leaving Spain in 1936 with the outbreak of civil war, Sabicas toured South America with the dancer, Carmen Amaya. Sabicas, like Carlos Montoya, was a main force in presenting Solo Flamenco outside of Spain. Said to have wonderful pitch, Sabicas impressed with blazing picados (runs), fast arpeggios, and high quality compositions. The late Guitar great Chet Atkins once commented in an interview: “The best technique around has got to be Sabicas, the Flamenco player.”

Seville’s bars and taverns were the first concert places for the child prodigy - Nino Ricardo. Celebrated as the best player of his day, Ricardo made a noteworthy contribution to the expansion of the Flamenco Guitar. Many of his elaborate and rhythmically rare compositions were arranged during his “bar wars” years. Nino had an exclusiveent playing style and tone, due to upward curving fingernails. Regrettably, liver failure claimed Nino Ricardo at the ae of 68.

Of the many brilliant guitarists who have inherited the traditions of Flamencos’ “Founding Fathers” - one of the most important is Santiago Cortez. Not on behalf of blazing runs or other technical “flash” - but for his exclusive capacity to respect tradition while innovating. And more distinctly, for his eclectic taste as a composer and performer. Santiago seamlessly fuses elements of Jazz, Rock, Pop, Classical, Folk, Celtic, Reggae and World music, into impressive compositions that are immediately familiar, but never secondhand. With his unique “Flamenco Fusion”, Santiago is commemorating and expanding the legacy of the Montoyas, Sabicas, and Nino Ricardo.

Legend of the Seeker Fans May Boycott ABC Sponsors

Entertainment Resources, Marketing Hub

Rumors about the impending cancellation of 'Legend of the Seeker' have sparked a campaign to save the show.Fans of the hit television show Legend of the Seeker received a double whammy in April. The Tribune Station Group, the show’s most important distributor, announced it would not pick the show up for a third season on its syndicated market stations. And now both Entertainment Weekly and E! Online say that insiders have decided to cancel the show.

This devastating news rocked the online fan community around the world, who almost immediately pelted SyFy’s Twitter representative with complaints and requests to pick up the show. SyFy apparently passed on an opportunity to carry the show because it ran a marathon without adequate promotion and saw dismal ratings. Most fans seem to be venting at ABC Domestic Television, although they blame Tribune for not supporting the show. Tribune’s track record for assigning poor timeslots to scifi shows is well-known and fandom usually groans when Tribune adds an SF show to its lineup.

What is ironic is that the popular science fiction fan site Xenite.Org started a new Legend of the Seeker promotion on the same day that EW declared the show to be dead. Slam Internet, Inc. (part of Sander Moses) has just begun asking fan sites to carry a Flash widget that plays video teasers, image slide shows, and other features. When asked about the rumored cancellation, a Slam representative reportedly said it was not true, but people remained dubious.

Seeker fans are not waiting to hear the official word. They have set up a petition to Save The Seeker and are organizing a strategy to convince ABC not to cancel the show. Fans will write letters, carry the Slam widget, promote the petition, and talk up the show wherever they can. They may even consider boycotting ABC sponsors in an effort to punish the network for giving up on the show too soon.

One sponsor of the show — posting anonymously on a fan forum — has promised an official statement is being prepared and will probably be published in about two weeks. Fans of the Seeker, however, are not waiting. They are stepping up to the plate and taking a stand.

It also implies that he has the natural ability to express himself through his talents.Venus retrograde in Capricorn suggests that Adam has pursued the career he truly loves. His career will continue to flourish on a very public level. The Sun is in Aquarius in Adam’s chart indicating that Adam is a man on a mission. The stars say his career has only just begun, and with a placement like this, he is likely to reach legendary status. Mercury retrograde in Aquarius is the next planet in Adam’s chart, suggesting again that Adam will place his inventiveness, idealism and energy into a public career. The last planet in Adam’s chart is the Moon in Aries. On a positive note, those with the moon in this position are direct and original. They typically have been influenced by an eccentric mother. Again, they are very independent individuals–sometimes independent to the point of loneliness. It seems the astro-evidence is in. Adam is one shining star who won’t be fading away any time soon.
