With the new summer season of 2009 rolling through, and the month of the World Series of Poker events having come and gone down once again, it is time now for the new year of ESPN’s coverage of the WSOP to begin. For those of us like myself who have watched 2008’s coverage again and again in its endless repeating since (I tend to like to watch poker while I run on the treadmill, so I am thankful it continues to run throughout the year), this new season’s broadcast should be a great refresh on those programs. I, for one, am excited to see what went down.

During the day, the air above the land heats up more quickly than the air over water. The warm air over the land expands and rises, and the heavier, cooler air rushes in to take its place, creating winds. At night, the winds are reversed because the air cools more rapidly over land than over water.

In the same way, the large atmospheric winds that circle the earth are created because the land near the earth’s equator is heated more by the sun than the land near the North and South Poles.

Today, wind energy is mainly used to generate electricity. Wind is called a renewable energy source because the wind will blow as long as the sun shines.
The History of Wind

Since ancient times, people have harnessed the winds energy. Over 5,000 years ago, the ancient Egyptians used wind to sail ships on the Nile River. Later, people built windmills to grind wheat and other grains. The earliest known windmills were in Persia (Iran). These early windmills looked like large paddle wheels. Centuries later, the people of Holland improved the basic design of the windmill. They gave it propeller-type blades, still made with sails. Holland is famous for its windmills.

American colonists used windmills to grind wheat and corn, to pump water, and to cut wood at sawmills. As late as the 1920s, Americans used small windmills to generate electricity in rural areas without electric service. When power lines began to transport electricity to rural areas in the 1930s, local windmills were used less and less, though they can still be seen on some Western ranches.

The oil shortages of the 1970s changed the energy picture for the country and the world. It created an interest in alternative energy sources, paving the way for the re-entry of the windmill to generate electricity. In the early 1980s wind energy really took off in California, partly because of state policies that encouraged renewable energy sources. Support for wind development has since spread to other states, but California still produces more than twice as much wind energy as any other state.

The nature of the blind bet in poker is to ensure that every hand will have action. Blinds, then, could just as easily be called ‘bait,’ as in most scenarios they are there to give a manner of definition to the action in a handsomething to vie for in raising and reraising, even when in the end they are often nominal comparatively to chip stacks and average pot sizes.

When a player raises the blinds at the casino online, then, they are essentially attacking. Especially in late position, when there have been no other bets in front, players will often make raises from or near the button under the assumption that minimally raising in position will make the blinds, who most often have nothing worth playing, lay their money down with no kind of resistance.

Calling a raise from the blind, especially with moderate hands such as connectors or etc., hands that might not be played from other positions, is considered ‘defending the blinds’: putting yourself out there because you already are partially invested. Not defending often enough, in these positions, can result in more aggressive players attempting even more regularly to steal, whereas defending with a wider range of poker online hands might discourage them from attacking with weaker holdings. In general, it seems best to be moderate but prudent in these situations, defending when necessary, but not simply out of spite.

It’s been a long standing and well supported theory in behavioral psychology that there exists in humans a kind of triune brain. That is, there are three parts that do distinct things. The reptilian brain which acts on instinct; the mammalian brain that handles emotions; and the neo cortical region which deals with logic and reason. Well, in a recent article, it’s been shown that understanding that reptilian brain may actually lead to a greater psychological advantage especially in poker if you can learn to overcome the instinctual phenomenon that is known as “blocking.”

Blocking is simply this: you know how you can teach an animal to respond to a stimuli, like when Pavlov’s dog responded to the bell. The dog learned that when the bell rang, food would soon follow. After enough training, the bell itself was enough to create a salivary response.

Now, think how hard it is to untrain that response. Well, the same can be said of poker tells. In a recent interview with two poker pros who wished to remain anonymous, Dr. Tim Lavalli was given an exclusive view into this phenomenon of blocking. Lavalli talked to two players who were talking about a certain player at their table. Specifically they were talking about his tells. As they talked, Dr Lavalli realized something very important. Player 1 brought up the tell he caught. See Player 1 beat the guy on a hand when he bet weak. The tell, he played with his chips right after the bet. Player 2 was astonished. See Player 2 picked up a different tell, he learned when the player was strong as he lost a pot to him. The tell: the guy made a clenched fist after he bet only when he was strong.

Now how do we explain the difference in the pick up. Well, let’s go back to that reptilian brain. Player 1 had the tell implanted in his head and was oblivious to the other one, he had already filled the “tell” stimuli in his head. Likewise, player 2 filled his with a different stimuli. Lavalli calls this blocking, and it’s the same principle that animals use when they learn to respond to stimuli.

Yeah yeah, I hear you, you’re saying so what. Well, think of it like this. If a player is weak enough to have one obvious tell, then he probably has more. If you can focus, you’ll be able to overcome your reptilian brain, and pick up on these other tells. Making your ability to read tells not one dimensional, but multi-faceted to the point where you’ll able to read your poker opponent quicker than a Google search.
