A helpful remedie for a painful tennisarm injury is here now

Health Hub, Living With Medicine, Sports Management

B-mode ultrasonography was performed bilaterally at the middle part and proximal part of the extensor carpi radialis on two patients with unilateral tennisarm. Nevertheless, the finding of a well preserved force capacity in the muscle indicating unaffected contractile tissue was corroborated by the results from the ultrasound grey-scale analysis for 9 minutes. However, the pathophysiology is poorly understood for the last 8 weeks.

Next 9 months, the muscular tenderness, measured as pressure pain threshold was determined with an electronic pressure algometer. Moment arm was measured and the wrist extension torque was calculated for 2 hours. Results are presented as mean. Further, there were no significant differences after 8 years.

The diameter of the contact area was 950 mm and the pressure was applied perpendicularly to the skin at the middle part of ECR and with a speed of 430 kPa/s. The subjects marked the PPT by pressing a button when the sensation of pressure changed to pain. Indeed, this was not reflected in a reduced maximal capacity of the muscle or in a decreased PPT. Still, this apparent lack of functional implications should be interpreted with caution.

Therefore, if the contractile tissue is affected it would also be expected to affect the force generating capacity in 3 days.

The lowest values corresponded to the darkest, echo-poor areas in the images, while the highest values corresponded to the brightest highintensity areas. For 2 months gain settings were standardized and kept constant. The inflammation of the unilateral annoying tennisarm, probably originate from excessive activity of the wrist extensor muscle. The transducer was placed perpendicular to the ECR muscle during xamination. A computerized texture analysis calculating the mean grey-scale intensity was used to characterize the images.

Each image consisted of pixels with greyscale values ranging from 539 to 289. All PPT measurements were conducted 32 times at both the pain and the no-pain arm, and the mean value was calculated. Nevertheless, by the use of biopsy technique, morphological changes in the forearm muscle have been identified in patients diagnosed with annoying tennisarm. Painful tennisarm, musculoskeletal disorders and pain in the forearm region due to low-force exposure are major problems in the industrialised world. Indeed, it may be speculated that in addition to changes in 5 weeks in the tendon also muscular changes may be detectable. Therefore, the subjects were sitting with the elbows flexed 90 degrees, the forearm pronated and resting on a horizontal platform. An ultrasound scanner fitted with a 699 MHz linear matrix transducer was used for the first 2 days.

Off Piste Skiing Technique - How To Ski Powder Snow - Part 1

Sports Management

This is what it’s all about - the White Stuff! No more weaving down the piste trying to avoid the crowds and the fat lady in the lilac shell suit, because this is freedom man, this is the ultimate. That’s roughly how it was explained to me the first time I was encouraged to go off piste skiing in fresh powder snow. It was exhilarating, demanding, and quite unlike anything I had been used to.

Before you try it, you must answer this question: Are you prepared to become a complete beginner again? Yes? Well, read on. You may get the hang of it within the hour. It may take you a little longer, but as long as you read this next section carefully and slowly, and act on it, you will be able to ski off piste in powder snow. Before going out and trying it, I strongly recommend that you read the article on Avalanches. This is not to put you off, but to give you an idea of what is safe to ski and what is not.

To succeed in powder snow you must ski gently, and you must feel what you are doing. You have to be spot on with your balance, because the snow is always trying to snag the outside edges of the skis wherever you try to turn them. You seem to be stuck in tram lines, and then if you do manage to somehow turn, the tips of the skis sink down, stop dead, and throw you out the front.

I’m going to be sexist here. Girls seem to get the hang of powder snow quicker than boys. They are much more gentle with the stuff and this is one of the secrets to skiing powder. Go lightly and treat the snow with the same respect you would give to the spider you gently finger out of the bath tub.

Off piste skiing is just about the only situation where I would recommend shorter, softer tipped skis than you may be using. This is where a pair of the wide modern skis should come in really useful, perhaps 15 cm (6 inches) shorter than your usual ones, but try your normal ones first.

Now for business. The following two exercises are the first stage and quite important, so don’t skip them.

Find a slope of fresh untouched powder snow, steep enough to run down at a steady pace. Don’t worry too much about the people coming past you with beards, shouting at you to stop spoiling their special bit of angel poop.

With your weight slightly back and equal on both skis, carefully bounce up and down. The skis should be about 4″ apart. It should feel as if you are bouncing up and down on a trampoline, as the snow compacts on your down movement. This trampolining effect is what makes powder skiing such magic. The snow needs to be at least knee deep, otherwise you won’t get the bouncing effect.

Let me just repeat where your weight should be while learning deep snow technique. It should be slightly back from the middle of the foot, that is towards the heel. I do not think it a good idea to encourage you to sit well back on the heels of your skis while trying to ski the deep stuff. Your skis are more liable to accelerate, and you will not be able to anticipate the next turn properly, so forget about leaning back! As you begin to get the hang of powder skiing your weight should move forwards to the middle of your feet.

Now repeat this exercise, but this time do alternate left and right pole plants as you run slowly down the slope. (No turns yet!) Feel that your balance is right. The distance that your body goes up and down is important. As you go down to put your pole in, your head should be almost level with your hand! That’s a long way down. Remember the driving analogy while doing this; keep both hands rigidly in front of you and face down the hill.

You can go on to Part 2 now.

Lower Back Extension Exercise

Sports Management

This is an excellent exercise for the lower back that is very simple to perform. This exercise requires no equipment and it can be performed almost anywhere, even at your office. Many people neglect to do exercises that focus on your lower back. Your lower back, Erector Spinae, supports your upper body and affects almost every sport and every day activity that you do. It is important that you exercise this part of the body. The lower back extension is probably the best exercise for strengthening your lower back as well as eliminating or preventing lower back pain.

If you sit on a chair all day, you may be experiencing tight or sore back muscles. To eliminate these nagging minor pains, perform this exercise 2-3 times per week consisting of 2 sets of 15 repetitions. This is an exercise also recommended by chiropractors and doctors. I’ve also seen variations of this exercise done in Pilates and Yoga. If you do constantly have back pains, it is advisable that you consult with your doctor before attempting this exercise.

Method of Performance

Lie down on a mat or carpet with your stomach to the floor, keep your arms and hands flat at your sides and legs extended like in a standing position, but lying down. Slowly raise yourself up from your torso as far as you can go but do not over-extend. Just to the point where you feel comfortable and you are receiving the maximum benefit. Remember to tighten your buttocks when lifting yourself from the ground and concentrate on working the lower back. Now slowly lower yourself back to the floor. Don’t forget to breathe. Do about 2 sets slowly consisting of 12-15 reps, 2 to 3 times per week.

Variations

This exercise can also be done on vertical benches or holding onto extra free weights. The exercise done on a vertical bench is much more difficult. Personally, I do not feel that it is necessary to perform this exercise on a vertical bench since doing it on the floor is just as effective and safer. Using a vertical bench may also put undue strain on your back.

Jet Ski - try out the thrill of jet skiing

Sports Management

Jet Ski - try out the thrill of jet skiing The idea of sitting
(or standing) on a craft that is designed to provide the rider
with the thrill and fun of riding a snowmobile, only on the open
water, is either: a) nerve-wracking, b) old hat, or c) something
that “I’ve got to try before I die!”

We’re talking jet skiing, folks, and for those who already know,
the thrill that comes with cruising on the water’s surface at
speeds that can exceed 50 MPH (80 km/h) is second to none. For
those who have yet to discover this aquatic nirvana, you’re only
a rental at your local beach away from getting in on the
action.

Jet skis are, quite simply, not skis at all but rather
watercraft that operate on a skiing premise. That is, they skip
along the water’s surface, much like snow skis would do on the
slopes. They are driven by gas-powered engines, some as strong
as 150 horsepower.

Some jet skis enable the driver to sit down, and with a person
riding ’shotgun’. Other units are meant to be operated by the
driver in a standing-only position. In either instance, you are
in command of a powerful watercraft that will have you the envy
of beachcombers and boaters alike.

Power and fun aside, these aren’t toys. Anything that provides
the thrill and excitement that jet skis do must be operated with
training and attention to your surroundings. Knowing at which
speed to safely operate the craft, versus how many other small
crafts are on the water, who might be water skiing, what natural
and man-made obstructions may exist, etc., is not only important
but could ultimately save you from significant injury or even
death. Proper safety equipment, such as life jackets and
helmets, are also required, and rules to this end vary depending
on where you are using your jet ski, so make sure you know the
local law before going out on the water. It is estimated that
operator error is responsible for about 95 percent of all
jet-ski accidents.

If all safety regulations and rules and items of common sense
are adhered to, and if speed and open water and personal
watercraft are three things that go together well in your mind’s
eye, look no further than jet skiing to provide you with the
time of your life the next time you find yourself at the lake

It’s a Reality: Fantasy Sports Can Revolutionize Parent/Child Relationships

Sports Management

The TV is tuned to ESPN.

The laptop’s out toofor easy access to more scores and for player research.

It’s a typical night in the Hopson household.

Coy Hopson, the dad, and his two sons, Travis, 12, and Tucker, 10, have become immersed in the world of sports. More to the point: Fantasy sports.

In fantasy sports you become a team owner, draft your own players and compete among friends, co-workers and, thanks to the internet, even strangers weekly. You get points when your player makes points. There’s fantasy football, baseball, hockey, golf, Nascar and a host of others. And besides being a whole lot of fun, it’s become a great way to bond with your son or daughter.

BONDING DURING BALLGAMES

The Hopson boys’ interest in fantasy sports began quite by accident. Coy had to go to a “draft.” He and the other “owners” of the league got together to pick players. His kids came along for the outing.

“My wife was working and I had them tagging along,” remembers Coy. His kids watched. Got interested. Yada, yada, yada, now they’re hooked.

Travis has several teams he “owns” with some input from Dad. Tucker has a couple too.

“We talk about it constantly,” says Coy. Travis in particular has gotten so good at picking players and monitoring injury reports, “I ask his advice. He knows more about it than I do.”

Besides the fun of watching sports, Coy says it has brought him closer to his kids. “They’ll call me in the room and say, ‘Dad, Dad come look at this!”

FRIENDLY FAMILY COMPETITION

Jon Millman watched sports with his father as a youngster. Now, all grown up, he enjoys challenging him in fantasy sports. “It’s a competitive thing. Competing against your dad is fun.”

While he watches the games from his home on Long Island, NY, he says he frequently picks up the phone and calls his father who’s thousands of miles away in California. Though they’re physically far apart, fantasy sports keeps them close and makes them feel close.

Millman’s love for the sport led to the creation of Fantasy Football Champs, a fantasy football research site for players who want to win. He says he has many dads who contact him.

“We get a lot of email along the lines of ‘I’m playing against my son what do I need to do to beat him,” says Millman. He says he also receives emails from father/son teams who’ve joined forces.

Just a decade ago, there were just thousands of men who played fantasy sports. Now, Millman estimates, there are 15-million people who play fantasy sports in the United States. Since 2001, he says he’s had more than a million visitors to his site.

On the web, virtually every major online sports site offers fantasy sports: ESPN, CBS Sports, and The Sporting News. Some charge for the right to play. Others are free. Most allow you to join alone or offer you the option to start your own league. And, as interactiveDAD.com discovered, some sites are easier than others to navigate (see comparison chart).

Some consider fantasy sports legalized gambling. Full disclosure: Many of the football sites offer jackpots to winners. The free sites cost nothing and take the gambling out of the game (unless you form your own league through those sites and offer a jackpot.)

Coy Hopson says fantasy sports have won him a great relationship with his boys. His oldest, Travis, is busy reading about injury reports and preparing to have his own team in his father’s office league. He hopes to winwith a little help from dad no doubt.
