Dental Implants - a Bridge or an Implant?

Health Hub, Your Looks

For those who have lost a single tooth, the bridge - a prosthetic tooth inserted into a gap between two healthy natural teeth - has been the most common solution for the past several decades. Today however, dental implants are a better solution for most patients - and in many cases, are more cost effective.

Currently, the cost for a single dental implant in the U.S. averages around $3000. However, once it is in place, it functions and looks exactly like the real thing; with proper attention to good oral hygiene, the implant should last throughout the remainder of the patient’s natural life.

While the “three-tooth bridge” (so called because it involves three teeth - the artificial prosthetic one and the two natural teeth on either side) may be less expensive initially, there are maintenance costs involved - and some technical problems as well. When a bridge is installed, the prosthetic tooth is linked to the teeth on either side of it. In order for this to happen, the orthodontist must actually whittle, or grind some material off of the adjoining teeth. This allows for the prosthesis to be slipped in over the top of the others.

One of the problems here is that because the three teeth are now linked together as one, ordinary dental hygiene is not possible. Special cleaning methods - inconvenient and not especially comfortable - are necessary in order to keep the underlying gum tissue healthy.

The other problem with the three-tooth bridge - which can add substantially to the cost - lies in the possibility that the supporting teeth on either side may become diseased or damaged in some way. Should this happen, the entire bridge will have to be replaced at considerable expense.

A Story Of Unbelievable Persistence

Your Looks

Dick and Jay sat on the ground outside the shed. The rain pelted down on them. They stared in disbelief at the lake of mud all around them. The Piper Cub slumped in the mud a few feet in front of them. Neither a wet bird nor muddy squirrel could be seen.

“It’s going to be like this for some time,” said Jay, gloomily, “according to the weather report.”

Dick feebly told the joke about the weatherman who left town because the weather didn’t agree with him–but neither of them laughed. The rain fell without remorse.

“Boy, boys, boys,” said a beautiful woman with auburn hair. She had a fresh complexion. She wore a wet, slightly muddy, mauve dress. She sat down between them, covering them with her pink umbrella.

Dick kissed his wife on the cheek. He reached down into the vanilla box for his sandwich. The box tumbled out of his hands and landed in a puddle. It floated.

“That’s it,” shouted Jay. He grabbed Dick’s elbow. “Don’t you see that’s it!”

It only took a day to add the inflated pontoon boats to the Piper Cub. Now instead of wheels, it had floats. Now, instead of the muddy runway, they used the river.

But another calamity awaited: a lightning storm. A bolt of lightning struck the hut, shattering it.

Without an office, it was hard to run operations.

Dick, however, found a solution. He bought a chicken coop from the farmer down the road for $25.

“One last yard,” said Dick, talking to the old mare. The mare grunted as it dragged along the chicken coop.

After propping up the chicken coop, Dick began whitewashing it.

“There,” said Dick, slapping on the last coat.

He stepped back to join his wife, Doreen, and his partner, Jay. All of them admired the bright chicken coop. It proudly bore the blue legend “Wolverine Air Service.”

“Soon,” said Dick, “Millions will be flying their own planes. They’ll come to us and we’ll teach them.”

“And it only cost us $200 to get this Piper Cub,” added Jay.

“Airplanes will swarm the air, the way cars do the ground,” predicted Dick.

Just then a freckled-faced young man came up to them.

“Is this your school?” he asked, squinting at Dick.

“Have you come for lessons?” asked Dick.

“Darn right!”

“We’d love to teach you, but we don’t know how to fly!” confessed Dick.

A few days later, however, they found a flight instructor. Dick straightened out the sheaf of papers on his ramshackle desk as the last interviewee walked out of the shack. He looked over at Jay. “Well?” Jay nodded. “I like him.”

“Then we have a new flight instructor,” said Dick, smiling broadly.

The next day, Dick and the new flight instructor stood outside the chicken coop office.

“How are you going to pay me?” asked the flight instructor, a tall man with thick dark hair and brilliant blue eyes.

“Cash,” said Dick, unruffled.

“But you said a moment ago that you don’t have any money?”

“I don’t,” confirmed Dick, “but they do.”

The flight instructor turned around to follow Dick’s finger. He had to chuckle. On the edge of the field was Jay whooping in a group of three eager students, all trussed up in flight gear. They were wet to their thighs from wading across the river.

“They’ll be the first to graduate,” affirmed Bob, the new flight instructor.

This is the story of Richard M. DeVos and his high-school buddy, Jay Van Andel, who came home after the Second World War convinced that the aviation business would be the trend of the future.

What Is An Effective Acne Treatment?

Lifestyle, Living With Medicine, Your Looks

Acne is a skin disease shared by many people, but everyone is different. What is an extremely effective acne treatment for one person may be over-drying and ineffective for another. I have heard stories of people who smear egg whites on their face, wait for it to dry (while enduring the smell) then wash it off and rave about the results. I had a roommate in college who would put toothpaste on emerging pimples in an attempt to dry them out. Who knows, these things may work very well for some people, but here is an idea that has worked for many.

A lot of medications can be very expensive, but this one is a very affordable acne treatment. First, wash your face with a gentle cleanser to get your skin ready for medication and get rid of any oils. Then apply a liberal amount of 2.5% benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide oxygenates the skin, which helps to kill the bacteria that cause acne. You can buy benzoyl peroxide in 5% and 10% concentrations, but many people find it better to use a lot of the gentler 2.5% treatment to avoid over irritating the skin. Lastly, apply a good moisturizer to counteract the drying effect of the benzoyl peroxide.

Purpose? What Purpose?

Your Looks

Picture this…everyday getting up to your alarm clock, begrudgingly rolling out of bed, grabbing a cup of coffee, showering, dressing, making that long commute to work, doing your job, coming home, going to bed, only to do it all over again the next day.

OR

Waking up, excited to greet the day and what may be in store for you. Feeling a spring in your step and a strong sense deep inside that whatever the day brings, you will have fun…because you know that you’re doing what you love, what you’re best at, and what you’re meant to be doing.

Purpose and Passion

What does it mean to live life with a passion and on purpose? What if you have no idea what your passion or purpose is? These are important questions and I am here to tell you…WE ALL have a purpose and WE ALL have passions. Whether it is clearly defined, whether we realize it or not, we do.

Some people are born knowing what ignites a fire for them, what drives them forward, what their purpose is. Others are less sure and go in search of that passion and purpose, exploring many things. How ever one comes to realize their own passion and purpose, it’s OK…there is no right or wrong way. Honestly, it was not until the last few years that I really came to understand what my purpose is. (I will admit sometimes trying to figure it out was rather frustrating. )

One day I was asked, “What do you feel your purpose is?” and without thinking the following words fell out of my mouth… “My purpose is to ask questions, to help others to find the resources and beauty within them and around them to excel.” THAT WAS IT! I quickly grabbed a piece of paper and a pen and wrote it down. It was then that I realized what I was most passionate about; helping others find the answers within them to move forward in their own lives. (That is exactly why I became a coach. :::smile::::)

Amazingly enough, all it took was someone to ask me a question and force me to think for a moment. So now, I wish to ask you, “What is your purpose?” If you don’t know the answer to that question just yet, that’s OK…instead consider the following questions;

1) What excites you the most?

2) What around you ignites a fire?

3) Have you ever done something where you lost all track of time? What were you doing?

If those questions don’t help to get your juices flowing, then try to visualize what your ideal day would look like. A day where you could do anything you wished. Grab a piece of paper and a pen and write down as much detail as possible. Where are you? What sounds do you hear? What are you doing?

Just remember, it’s OK if the answers do not come right away…they may come when you least expect them. In the meantime, have fun exploring.

What You Habitually Think Becomes Attracted to You

Your Looks

Are you frustrated with a certain area of your life? Want to make a change? You can change it as soon as you decide to change it.

You might say, “It can’t be that simple.” It really is that simple.

We must understand that what we ponder and think about sets the course for our lives, because what we ponder and think about gets magnified and becomes attracted to us. It’s “cause and effect.”

Many people will curse the effect, but continue to nourish the cause. The problem isn’t that they’re a victim, but the culprit.

Most of our current circumstances were birthed from our thoughts, and at any time we choose, we can change it all. We have both the ability and the responsibility to make better choices beginning today.

If the idea of having to change yourself makes you uncomfortable, you can remain as you are, but then you would have no right to complain.

Make a decision right now. Change that area of your life you want to change. How? Start by making a list of the things you habitually say about your undesirable circumstance. Get help from someone who knows you well. Ask him or her what negative things you say regularly. And be open minded! Don’t get mad at them for telling you the truth. I will promise you that you are saying things you don’t realize you’re saying!

Once you have your list of verbal garbage, make another list that contains positive, faith filled sentences that are directly opposite. Don’t worry about whether these new sentences are true or not. It makes no difference. Your subconscious mind does not distinguish true from false. It only accepts the information you give it.

Now what you want to do is burn this new programming into your mind. Read and confess it everyday. Remember, what we ponder and think about sets the course for our lives, because what we ponder and think about gets magnified and becomes attracted to us.

Cause and effect says, “Think repetitive thoughts, reap their physical manifestations.”

Again, if you’re frustrated with a certain area of your life and you want to make a change, you can change it as soon as you decide to change it. You must start by changing your thoughts and what you say about it.

Hair Loss In Women - A Devastating Occurrence

Your Looks

Hair loss is widely accepted as a man’s problem and it is quite common to see bald men. However, hair loss in women is just as common, but it is more devastating for the individual when it does happen. The psychological impact of hair loss in women is much greater because many women see their hair as the main part of their beauty and take great pride in their appearance. However, this problem does not usually result in total hairloss as it does in men.

Hair loss in women has various different causes. It could be hereditary, but this is very rare. Also, the hair loss treatment for women is different from that of men because many of these treatments cause hair to grow on other parts of the body such as the face, back and chest. For hairloss in women, many doctors prescribe treatments of estrogen, but there are no proven studies that show that a lack of estrogen does lead to hair loss in women.

Androgenic alopecia is a condition that affects about 2% of the population, resulting in total hair loss all over the body. There is no cure for hairloss in women or men who have this condition, but doctors can prescribe treatments to help lessen the symptoms. Some of these hair loss treatments for women include glucocorticoids, topical treatments, of which Minoxodil is the only one recommended for women, or anthralin. Mild cases of hair loss in women respond better to these treatments than more severe cases.

Patterns of hairloss in women are different than in men. Rather than experiencing total hairloss, women usually have small patches of baldness and the hair thins only in those areas. Such things as severe stress, an illness or even surgery can cause sudden hair loss in women. Many women experience hair loss following giving birth and some medicines can also bring this on. In these cases, once the situation is resolved the hair follicles start to grow again and the hairloss process is reversed.

When a woman consults her doctor about a hair loss problem, the doctor will look for the root causes. Once the cause is identified then he/she will be able to prescribe the proper hair loss treatment for women.

Hair loss in women is more common than you may realise, but can often be treated.
